You may have heard of this origami game being called a fortune teller. When I was younger, my friends and I would use the two names interchangeably. It's a simple and entertaining game that brings a touch of magic to your Halloween festivities.
How do you play?
To play the cootie catcher, you choose one of the four outer flaps, often named after colors. For example, if you choose “blue,” you spell out the letters “b-l-u-e” and then open up the folds to reveal four numbers. Next, you select a number and count up to it. Finally, you encounter another set of four numbers, choose one, and lift the flap to unveil your fortune!
In this special spooky version, you start by selecting a Halloween-themed image and spell out its corresponding letters. After that, you choose a number, count up to it, and then pick another number to reveal a hilarious Halloween joke!
How to fold a fortune teller:
Folding a fortune teller is a breeze! Back in the day, my friends and I used to make cootie catchers all the time. I considered myself a bit of a pro! However, if you need a quick refresher, here's a simple folding tutorial:
- Once you've cut out the cootie catcher, place the artwork face down on a table. Fold each corner to the opposite corner.
- Fold all of the corners to the center once again.
- Flip the page over so that all of the folds are now facing down.
- Repeat step 2 by folding all of the corners into the center.
- Finally, fold your page both horizontally and vertically.
And voila! You're all set to enjoy and laugh at all the silly jokes hidden inside the cootie catcher.

This cootie catcher is designed to be printed on a standard 8.5×11 inch piece of printer paper or cardstock. You can download and print as many copies as you like, but please refrain from editing or redistributing the files.

- Crayons: A staple in any crafting household. Crayola is always the top-notch choice!
- Kid-Friendly Safety Scissors: Perfect for little kids learning how to use scissors. They cut paper but not fingers or hair!
- Glue Sticks: My favorite are the disappearing purple glue sticks! I love buying them in bulk since we use them so often.
- Lamination Machine: Laminating printables is a great way to make them last longer. If you plan on laminating to make games reusable, be sure to grab some dry erase markers too.
- Dry Erase Pockets: These are a fantastic alternative to using a lamination machine when you want to make printable games and activities reusable.
