Bats: Our Unsung Heroes

Bats play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Did you know that they can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in just one hour? As someone who is allergic to mosquito bites, bats are my heroes! Living in Arizona, I also appreciate pallid bats that keep the scorpion population in check. After all, scorpions are a lot scarier than these flying mammals!

Why Are Bats Associated with Halloween?

You might be wondering why bats are so strongly associated with Halloween. It all started with the species of bats that feed on blood, also known as vampire bats. The association became even stronger when Bram Stoker's Dracula depicted vampires shapeshifting into bats. From that point on, people began to view bats as scary and fearsome creatures, making them a perfect symbol for Halloween.

How to Make Halloween Bat Decorations

Here's a simple and fun DIY idea for Halloween decorations using the bat templates:

  1. Download and print out your favorite bat templates on 8.5″ x 11″ printer paper. For more durability, you can also print them on cardstock.
  2. Cut out the template patterns with scissors.
  3. Trace the bat outlines on black construction paper or cardstock using a pencil. Don't worry about the pencil outlines being visible; you can simply flip the paper over and use the other side.
  4. Carefully cut out the bat templates.
  5. Use masking tape to stick the paper bats on a door or wall, creating a stunning display that will impress your guests and trick-or-treaters.
