How to make a paper jumping frog (Step-by-step tutorial)

Origami jumping frogs are not only easy to make but also incredibly fun. In this article, we will guide you through the step-by-step process of creating your very own paper frog. And guess what? When you press on the back of this little creature, it actually jumps!

Materials Required:

  • Color paper / Origami paper
  • Googly eyes (optional)

Step 1: Take a Square Paper

To begin this creative journey, you'll need a square piece of paper. If you don't have origami paper on hand, don't worry. Simply grab some color paper and cut it into a square shape, approximately 20 cm in size.

Step 2: Fold It

Fold the paper in half from left to right, making sure the left two corners meet the right two corners. This creates a crease (2a). Next, fold it again from bottom to top, aligning the top two corners and creating another crease (2b). These creases are crucial for the upcoming steps, so be sure to fold them properly.

Step 3: Fold Again

Open the folded part in 2b to restore the rectangle shape. You will now have two identical squares. The next step involves making folds within these squares.

On the top square, follow the black line in the picture above (3a) to make a diagonal fold along the crease. Press along the new fold with your fingers to create another crease. Repeat this process from bottom right to top left, resulting in additional creases (3b).

Now, open the fold (3c). In the bottom square, make a horizontal fold along the same crease as before (the black line in pic 3a) and create yet another crease (3e).

Step 4: Repeat the Same Process with the Top Square

As you did in step 3, repeat the folding process with the top square. Make two diagonal folds and one horizontal fold, ensuring to create the necessary creases at each step.

Step 5: Make the Waterbomb Base

Now it's time to fold what's known as the “waterbomb base” in both squares. Follow the folding instructions below:

  1. Fold the paper together from both sides, following the diagonal and horizontal creases (5a).
  2. Push in the sides and fold the paper in half, following the horizontal crease you previously made (5a).
  3. You should now have a triangle shape (5b).
  4. Repeat this process with the bottom square, resulting in a diamond shape (5c).

Step 6: Fold the Legs of the Paper Frog

Now, focus on the upper triangle (6a). Take vertex C and fold it to touch vertex A, creating a crease (6c). Repeat this step with vertex B, folding it to touch vertex A and creating another crease (6d). Unfold the paper and fold vertex C once again, aligning it with the new crease you just made (6e and 6f). Then, fold vertex B along the same crease (6g).

Repeat this entire process with the bottom triangle to form the remaining two legs of the paper frog (6h).

Step 7: Fold the Body of the Paper Frog

Now, turn the paper over to the other side. Keep the paper in a position where the frog's legs form a vertical line (see the black line in the first collage of pic 7a). Fold one corner of the diamond shape, making sure its vertex crosses more than half of the diamond (see the black line in the second collage of pic 7a). This fold should be slightly longer than the horizontal diagonal of the diamond shape.

Next, fold the right side of the shape so that its vertex touches the bottom (pic 7b and 7c). Pay attention to the point marked as O, which is the vertex of the triangle you previously folded in step 7a (7d). After folding, press firmly to create a crease. Open this fold and tuck the corner into the pocket shown in pic 7e. Repeat the same procedure on the left side to complete the body of the paper frog (7f).

Step 8: Making the Paper Frog Jump

Turn the paper frog to face the back side (8a). Find the crevice pointed out by the finger in the image. Fold along the crevice and lightly press it (8b and 8c). Afterward, fold the folded part again from top to bottom (8d). Press it well (8f).

Now, turn the frog to face the front side (8g). To give your frog some personality, add some design and glue on googly eyes (optional). And there you have it—your easy paper frog is ready! Press on the folds to see it jump (8h). You can even make multiple paper frogs and hold a race to see which frog jumps the farthest.
