Getting Started

If you're tired of your old foam Halloween cemetery tombstones and want to upgrade, look no further. Instead of sawing wood and struggling with shapes, we'll be using black foam core board for a hassle-free experience. Let's create tombstones that will withstand the test of time!

Materials You'll Need

Here's a list of items you'll need for this project:

  • INDOOR USE ONLY: Black Foam-core Board: 32 x 40 in (I used 4 for 8 large and 4 small tombstones) from Hobby Lobby
  • OUTDOOR USE: Thin Wood Sheets or Coroplast Corrugated Plastic Sheets
  • Heavy Duty Plastic Handle X-Acto Knife
  • White Acrylic Paint
  • White Sharpie Oil Paint Pen
  • Valspar Black Chalkboard Paint
  • Krylon Flat Crystal Clear, Paint-Primer (Indoor-Outdoor): 2 Cans
  • Wet Wipes
  • Paint Brushes & Foam Paint Applicators
  • Inkjet Printer
  • Gorilla Glue Waterproof Clear Grip Adhesive

How to Make Foam Core Chalkboard Tombstones

Let's dive right in and start creating our tombstones. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Print Tombstone Design Templates: Right-click and download the tombstone images provided. Head over to BlockPosters.com and upload an image. Crop the image close to the tombstone edges and select “2 PAGES WIDE” under “customize your poster”. After accepting the terms of service, create and download the PDF.

  2. Prepare the Templates: Tape the tombstone images together. Cut the tombstone out around the border. Place the template over the foam and trace the outline of the tombstone.

  3. Cut Out the Tombstones: Use a large heavy-duty X-Acto knife to cut out the tombstone shapes from the foam core board. Remember, a larger knife will provide smoother cuts.

  4. Paint the Tombstones: Apply a thin layer of latex chalkboard paint to each tombstone, ensuring all the edges are covered. Weigh down the tombstones as they dry to prevent warping.

  5. Add Accents and Sayings: Paint the edges of the tombstones with white acrylic paint for a chalky look. Use a text editor or Microsoft Word to print out sayings for your tombstones. Lay the sheet with the sayings over the foam tombstone and go over the outline of the words with a pencil. Fill in the words with a white Sharpie paint pen.

  6. Seal and Display: Let the tombstones dry completely. Spray them with Flat Crystal Clear Paint Primer to seal the paint. Weigh them down once again after spraying to prevent warping. Finally, attach paint sticks to the back with Gorilla Glue Clear Contact Adhesive and place them in your desired location.

And voila! You now have your very own DIY Halloween Chalkboard Tombstones to spook up your decor.

Remember, creativity knows no bounds, so feel free to experiment with different designs and ideas. Let your imagination run wild!
