How to Make Spooky Halloween Silhouettes for Windows

Are you looking to add some spooky vibes to your home this Halloween? Decorating your windows with Halloween silhouettes is a fantastic way to set the eerie atmosphere. Join me as I share my experience and tips on creating these hauntingly beautiful decorations.

When I was younger, Halloween wasn't as popular in my part of the world. Trick-or-treating was a rare occurrence, but times have changed, and we're now embracing the spirit of Halloween on the west coast of Australia. I must admit, I feel a bit overwhelmed by the incredible Halloween decorations I see online. Still, I'm determined to give it a go and create something special for the neighborhood kids who come knocking on my door.

To make the most of my limited front yard space, I decided to focus on the windows. While my house is set back from the road, I have a large window that I thought could be the perfect canvas for a spooky display. So, I set out on a quest to find the right Halloween window decorations.

Materials You'll Need

Before we dive into the creative process, let's gather the necessary supplies. Here's what you'll need:

  • 3 rolls of chalk adhesive vinyl (AU: KMart vinyl chalkboard roll)
  • Printed image (via Google images)
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors
  • Lead/graphite pencil
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Eraser (optional)

The amount of vinyl required depends on the size of your window and the project at hand. The rolls I purchased from KMart measured 200cm long x 45cm wide.

STEP #1: Download Your Silhouette

To begin, perform a Google image search for a spooky scene or Halloween characters. Keep the design simple, like a cartoon or clipart. Although my design spanned across multiple drops of vinyl, it's easier if you can keep your shapes within the width of one roll or even two. However, this was my first attempt, and even with additional drops of vinyl, the result turned out impressive.

Here are some tips for finding, downloading, and printing your character:

  1. When searching, use terms like “monster clipart” to keep it simple.
  2. Ensure that the image you select doesn't have a background or has a transparent or white background. It should be easy to differentiate the character.
  3. Click on the image, then right-click and select “Open Image in New Tab” (steps may vary depending on your browser; I use Chrome).
  4. In the new tab, you can send the image directly to your printer. Adjust the size of the image via the scale in the printer settings. Keep in mind that small images may become pixelated when scaled too big. I recommend printing the image as large as possible, but an A4 sheet of paper should work fine.

STEP #2: Attach Adhesive Vinyl to the Window

Now it's time to roll out your vinyl. Don't worry if there are kinks; we won't remove the backing just yet. Instead, use masking tape to attach the vinyl to the window. This will help you visualize the placement and make adjustments if needed.

Step #3: Setting Up for Grid Drawing

Drawing a grid on your paper is an optional step that can help you scale the image and copy it accurately. Divide your paper into sections using a 16-square grid or a smaller grid for smaller characters. You don't need to measure the grids precisely; estimating by eye will do. On the vinyl, lightly draw the cross points of the grid in some places, but be mindful not to erase too many pencil marks, as this may lighten the color slightly.

Step #4: Drawing Your Halloween Silhouette Scene

Now it's time to bring your silhouettes to life. Refer to your printouts and draw the shapes on the vinyl. Don't feel restricted by the grid; adapt and make adjustments as necessary. Start with a light basic outline and gradually add more detail and refine the shapes. Remember, intricate designs may be more challenging to cut out and stick on the window.

Step #5: Cut Out Your Vinyl Shapes

Once you're satisfied with your drawn shapes, it's time to cut them out. Some shapes may be easy to cut while still attached to the window with masking tape, while others may need to be peeled off, cut, and repositioned. Remember to remove one sheet or drop of vinyl at a time and avoid scrutinizing the exact positioning too much, as it may naturally shift during the process.

Step #6: Adhere Halloween Silhouettes on the Window

Now comes the fun part! Peel off the backing and carefully stick the vinyl silhouettes onto the window. Try to avoid air bubbles and ensure alignment, similar to covering books. Keep in mind that these decorations are meant to be viewed mostly from a distance and at night, so any minor imperfections won't be noticeable unless closely examined.

Step #7: A Quick Tidy Up

Trim any overlapping areas with scissors for a clean and polished look. If you wish, you can erase the pencil lines, but be cautious not to overdo it on the heavier lines, as it may fade the vinyl slightly. Rest assured, these pencil lines won't be visible unless you're up close. Once it's dark and the backlight is on, they'll be practically invisible.
