The Inspiration Behind the Exotic Spice Shop

As the leaves change color and fall from the trees, my husband Greg and I indulge in our annual horror/thriller TV-and-movie marathon. One of our favorite shows is Grimm, where I find myself captivated by Rosalee's spice shop and the apothecary jars within. This year, I decided to turn my collection of old bottles and jars into Halloween props and bring my own spice shop to life!

Working together, Greg and I brainstormed the name for our shop. After much deliberation, we settled on “The Toad & Broomstick.” Can you guess which one refers to me?

The Transformation Begins

With our shop's name in place, it was time to focus on the goods it would carry and the labeling of those goods. Our apothecary would offer a range of items, from remedies to deadly potions. I spent a week designing over 80 labels for 30+ ingredients. The labels turned out so cool that I knew I had to share them with you. The Magic of Apothecary Jars and Bottles

To bring our spice shop to life, we collected jars and bottles of different sizes and shapes. You can find these treasures at thrift stores, from family members, or even at local shops. Don't worry about imperfections; slightly worn out or dirty containers add an authentic look to your spice shop. So, put away those dusters and sponges!

Enhancing the Apothecary Jar Experience

The lids of the jars and bottles are just as important as the containers themselves. Add a touch of mystery by enhancing the lids. You can use materials like Spanish moss, cork, burlap, spider webbing, jute twine, and black and bronze spray paints. Mix and match to achieve a unique and fascinating look.

Labels with Character

While Rosalee's spice shop in Grimm showcases new-looking cookie-cutter labels, we wanted to bring variety to our spice shop. So, I designed different types of labels for our jars and bottles. Some labels are wrinkled, some have torn edges, and some look brand new. There's no right or wrong when it comes to this project, so have fun experimenting!

To achieve torn edges, dampen the edges of the paper with a wet Q-tip. Tear the edges slowly for a moderately torn look or press the Q-tip and pull the paper for a worn-out appearance. Let your imagination guide you!
